The tequila margarita has been around for a very long time, in addition it is one of the most traditional drinks associated with the spirit of Mexico. The tequila margarita has a very shady history; some believe that it was created in 1934 by a bartender for a famous restaurant in Matamoros named Los Dos Republicas for one of the restaurant’s customers. Her name was Marguerite Hemery. It is said that she was great friends with the owner of the restaurant. Although the marguerite fable sounds very plausible, other tales point to a bar owner named Daniel Negrete who was said to develop the cocktail for a wedding gift for his sister-n-law Margarita. This was in 1937 and the bar was located inside the Garci Crispo Hotel. This version of the margarita was said to be very close to the tequila margarita on the rocks recipe.

There are later recollections of others who have apparently contributed to the tequila margarita history. In the 1940’s when sexy actress Rita Hayworth was gaining notoriety, Enrique Bastate Gutierrez was said to have adorned the star and paid tribute to her by creating the margarita named after her original name. However, this story and other stories are contradicted by the rumor that the Margarita was named after her before she became an actress while she was employed at a dance club in Tijuana under her original name Margarita.

Perhaps the notoriety of many of these peoples creativity were so similar in fashion that they all played a role in creating the tequila margarita, and with that came even more claims having made the tequila margarita cocktail.

  • In 1942, a bartender named Francisco Pancho Morales stumbled on a request for the Magnolia, and improvised resulting in a Margarita .
  • In 1948, the tequila margarita was said to have been created for Peggy Lee by Santos Cruz at the Balinese room in Galveston, Texas.
  • In 1948, Margaret Sames owner of the Acapulco Bar was said to have invented the cocktail.

The tequila margarita has many recipes, however the traditional margarita is very much the same as all these people have claimed to establish.

Here is the traditional tequila margarita cocktail recipe, on the rocks.

  • 1½ oz Tequila
  • 1 oz Cointreau or Triple sec
  • ½ oz Lime Juice

Fill a margarita glass with ice. Make sure it has a salted rim. Then combine ingredients in a shaker with ice, strain into the margarita
glass and enjoy your tequila margarita cocktail.
